Bulls on Parade

I took Manders to Larkfest earlier today and we had a blast.

Tom Morello headlined and Amanda had a fine time. Well, a fine time considering her first concert experience was with her father, twenty thousand drunken frat boys, seven filthy anarchists, three large topless women and a couple of really baffled looking union guys all standing in a street to listen to a band she never heard of.

She did have fun taking pictures of the cops taking pictures of us.

Oh yeah, don’t let anyone tell you that this was an acoustic set. This ain’t the Indigo Girls and, as Mr. Morello puts it: “You don’t gotta be loud, son, to be heavy as shit!”

Listening

Last·fm is one of those webby things that has lurked in my peripheral vision for years. Sometimes it turns up in an email signature, it’s in my profile on several sites and on occasion has been known to turn up as a newsfeed or a sidebar widget. It’s just kind of there.

When I plant myself in front of the computer for any length of time I paw through the gazillion songs on this crate and put twenty or so into a playlist. When it ends I know it’s time to walk away, have a smoke and get more coffee. The morning mood, today, was popish and short — Big Star, The Replacements, The Box Tops and some Posies.

The common thread is obvious. Well, maybe not obvious, but not exactly obscure.

I also had K.C and the Sunshine band in there.

The fact that somebody got the connection between the ‘Mats and K.C. and the Sunshine Band, and cared enough to email, astounded me.

Killer video

Lian Lunson’s 2005 documentary, “Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man,“ is available on YouTube.

… in a series of candid interviews, Cohen himself reveals his trademark wry humor and soulful intensity, using his own artwork, poetry, and personal collection of photographs to reflect upon his colorful past and his creative process.

The covers are, for the most part, what you would expect with the exception of Nick Cave’s ballsy, “There is a War.” For me, the highlight was Cohen discussing, albeit too briefly, his life and art.

I thought the documentary was a little long and a little repetitive, but Cohen on Cohen is unusual and well worth a look.

Then we have, Videohybrid, an absolutely horrid little conjunction of piracy, Web 2.0 and social networking. Nothing is legal, nothing works and little is explained.

If you’re curious, I would look now. Unless the data center is in a Tora Bora bunker, there is no way Videohybrid can last long. It’s only a question of whether the servers get confiscated or the site melts down under it’s own inertia. Piracy, full-length video and HTTP — unless you’re Google — go together about as well as toddlers and firearms.

I am not above downloading a torrent of a loved Sopranos episode or Deadwood, but for anything other than disposable amusement, I prefer my video without heads popping up, unsynchronized audio, bad color and lousy focus. Even the DVD rips are awful and far too compressed.

I don’t see what Hollywood is so worried about. Nobody who cares about entertainment is going to sit through this crap and anyone who does, isn’t your customer anyway.
